A native of Denver, Colorado, United States, McClarnon began his acting career in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Chanticleer Theater in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
His early television shows and film credits include My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Tequila and Bonetti (1992), Baywatch (1992), Murphy Brown (1993), Renegade (1994), Silent Fall (1994), Thunder in Paradise (1994), The Lazarus Man (1996), Dangerous Minds (1996–1997), and Chicago Hope (1997).
After starring as Little Creek’s Friend in the 2002 American animated western film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, McClarnon played three episodes in Into the West as Running Fox in 2005.
