After graduating from Palo Alto College, she began working at Medical Center Hospital. She received her license from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners in 1990 and earned an average annual salary of $60,000 dollars. She was later sued for stealing $9200 from Dr. Faustino Gomez who claimed she stole from him since 1983.
She got a transfer from Medical Center to St. Luke’s Lutheran Hospital. When there she was sued by Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, for failing to pay her student’s loan worth $7,361.

Yolanda began attending Selena’s concerts when Selena was at the peak of her career and she dominated the Tejano Music Awards. She then became a super fan and began calling her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr, requesting if she could start a fan club for Selena in San Antonio.
After several calls, her father gave in and Yolanda was made president of the fan club in the San Antonio area. The club grew gradually from a start of 1500 members in less than four years, to more than 5000 over the years. Due to the gradual growth of the club, Yolanda was given a job as manager of Selena’s clothing boutiques, Selena Etc.
Selena’s family then discovered that Yolanda was embezzling funds from the business in 1995. Selena decided to confront the situation and agreed to meet Yolanda in a Corpus Christi Days Inn motel to get financial records that Yolanda had been holding back. She delayed handing them over on claims that she had been raped in Mexico and needed medical attention. Selena took care of the situation by taking her to the hospital but the doctors found no evidence on Yolanda that she had been raped.
They returned to the motel and Selena demanded the records and Yolanda pulled out a 38 Taurus Model 85 revolver. She shot her in the back when she attempted to run away. Selena ran towards the lobby for help as she was bleeding out from the gunshot. The clerk called 911 but Selena died due to bleeding out in the hospital. Yolanda was arrested and charged for the murder of Selena in 1995 with a criminal penalty of a life sentence with a possibility of parole.
