John Vogel was born on October 4, 1942, in Sauk Centre, Stearns County, Minnesota, USA.
He was married and had three children that were living with their mother.
He looked after his kids during the summer but was absent for most of the year. His parents, father-absent, and mother, Margaret, emotionally distant, passed before he moved on from his hometown for better prospects.

As stated by Jennifer, John was not like other fathers, he took his children on fishing trips and vacations. He remembered their birthdays and sent gifts whenever.
He lived in his cabin, and that he was a delinquent in early childhood. He spent time in jail for a violent crime.
The life of John Vogel’s Counterfeit life was told by Jennifer on September 5, 2005, and is recently getting a Film based on her works as “Flim-Flam man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life”.
He, 42 years old, moved on to Seattle with his daughter Jennifer,18 years at the time, by selling his Cadilac and getting a 1977 Chevy station Wagon with a 350 engine, with $8,500, he took a loan.
They moved into a moderately priced house in Kirkland, a clean generic and a safe distance from the city.
When they stayed in Seattle, Jennifer worked in a low-paying part-time job canvassing the city’s neighborhood, collecting money for SANE, an anti-nuclear weapons lobby.
Hours after his first robbery he went into a branch of Spokane’s Great Western Savings Bank; he took $27,000, after which he was arrested after a speed chase throughout the Interstate.
It was found that he was also accounted for almost $20 million in Counterfeiting and had spent more than $50,000 of the fake money.
On January 17, 1995, he escaped from his impending trial and was later found dead when the vehicle he escaped was found on the side of a road, stuck in a ditch and dead by suicide, a self-inflicted gunshot.
Financial Situation of the Family
John was a business ban bogged down by debt and lawsuits.
His ex-wife was suing him for child support and for $40,000 for the inheritance he received from an inheritance.
Several people were also pursuing him for a total of $130,000 in lawsuits. These facts compelled him to run to Seattle for a fresh start and eventually to crime.
