Was Maya Murmu An Elephant Poacher?
This story intrigued people who wanted to know why an elephant did so twice!
Maya Murmu, as of now, has not been proved or stated to be an elephant poacher nor the villagers have given any affirmation on her hurting those wild animals.
Nevertheless, various speculations have been made about Murmu helping poachers steal the elephant’s baby.
This animal assaulted Maya and then proceeded to tramp her graveyard. It sounds horrific, but it is still unclear why the elephant left the sanctuary, their preferred habitat, and attacked an old woman with such zeal.
As Duncan McNair, a lawyer/instigator of Save The Asian Elephant puts it, elephants are generally peaceful creatures, nevertheless, when provoked, they have been known to attack humans.
He further added that it could be merely possible that the elephant was still in the vicinity at the funeral, and it returned after recognizing the Murmu’s body, which is not evident.

Maya Murmu’s Murder – What Happened?
As stated earlier, the wild elephant murdered an old woman named Maya Murmu of Odisha. While she was fetching water for her home, she was approached by a herd of elephants.
The elephants were believed to have appeared from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary in Jharkhand, located around 200 kilometers from Raipal, the village of Maya Murmu.
Seeing the herd of wild elephants coming up to her, she tried to leave, and that’s when one of the elephants charged toward Murmu and trampled her.
Furthermore, it reappeared alongside a larger herd as Murmu’s loved ones gathered to lay her to rest. Unbelievably, it descended on the funeral, toppled Murmu’s body from her funeral pyre, stomped her once again, and hurled her body away.
People gathered for her funeral ran for their lives as the elephant roared. Once the elephants left the funeral site, Maya’s family completed the rituals without re-invading those wild animals.
A number of homes, including Maya Murmu’s, is reported to be damaged by the herd of these wild elephants. According to the World Wildlife Fund, elephants kill around 100 people annually in India, while the maximum number could be up to 300.
